Trampolines for adults and gymnastics

Quick answer
For adults and gymnastics practice, look at a rectangular shape for the most even bounce, reinforced or pro-class springs, a heavy frame and a high manufacturer-stated test weight. Check the maximum user weight in the manual – it is not the same as the test weight. The North Performer is rectangular with S1200 Pro springs and is weight-tested to 1,100 kg, according to the manufacturer.
Important
We do not give medical or coaching advice. Follow the manufacturer's manual, and learn skills such as somersaults only with qualified coaching.
What changes when adults jump
Adults are heavier and jump with more force, so the springs, mat and frame work harder. A trampoline built mainly for young children may feel soft, bottom out or wear quickly under regular adult use. Gymnasts and teenagers practising skills also want a predictable bounce across the whole mat, not just in the centre.
Tested weight vs maximum user weight
Manufacturers publish two different numbers. The test weight is the load the structure has been tested with. The maximum user weight is how much one person may weigh while jumping. The test weight says something about how robust the frame and springs are; it does not mean several adults can jump together. Maximum user weight is in the manual, and where we do not have it published we show "n/a".

Shape
Rectangular trampolines give the most even bounce across the mat, which is why they are common for gymnastics and for practising tricks. Round trampolines pull the jumper towards the centre, which some find reassuring but less predictable at the edges. See our comparison of rectangular vs round vs oval and browse rectangular trampolines.
Springs, frame and mat
Stronger springs give a livelier bounce for heavier jumpers. North classifies its own springs as S400, S700 and S1200 Pro; in our scoring model we treat these as standard, reinforced and pro. A heavier frame spreads the load and resists twisting. A performance mat, which all three North models have according to the manufacturer, is designed for a responsive bounce. Adjustable bounce lets you change the tension for different jumpers.
Size and space
Adults need a larger jumping area and more clearance. As general guidance, leave at least 2 m free around the trampoline and 5 m clear above, and follow the manual. Our size guide and size calculator help you check what fits.
Jumping safely
- One jumper at a time unless the manual says otherwise.
- Warm up and start with low, controlled bounces.
- Learn flips and somersaults only with qualified coaching.
- Stop when you are tired – most mistakes happen then.
How to use our comparison
Every product in our comparison is shown with the details the manufacturer or retailer actually publishes. Where a detail is missing we show "n/a" rather than guess. Scores are built from specifications covering safety, performance, durability, ease of use and value, and any commission we may earn from retailers never changes a score. We have not tested the trampolines ourselves, so use the comparison to narrow things down, then read the manufacturer's manual before you decide. The full model is explained on how we compare.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reading the test weight as the maximum user weight.
- Buying a small round trampoline for gymnastics practice.
- Several adults jumping at once.
- Trying new skills without coaching.

Frequently asked questions
Can adults use a garden trampoline?
Yes, if the manual's maximum user weight allows it. Regular adult use suits a sturdier model.
What is the best shape for gymnastics?
Rectangular trampolines give the most even bounce and are common for practising skills.
What does 'weight-tested to 1,100 kg' mean?
That the manufacturer has tested the structure with that load. It is not the maximum weight for one jumper.
Should I learn flips on a garden trampoline?
Learn advanced skills only with qualified coaching. We do not give coaching or medical advice.
Always follow the manufacturer's manual and local regulations. This guide does not replace the instructions supplied with the product.
